What part will you play?
This is a national digital senior news writer who covers race as a full-time beat. This role will report into the National Digital News Desk and partner closely with the beat leader, key teams in digital and in newsgathering. This Senior Writer will be sourced enough to break news on his/her beat and nimble enough to identify and produce enterprising and explanatory race and identity angles on big national news developments. This Senior Writer must be a strong writer who can turn distinctive reporting into compelling Digital content. This Senior Writer will be a creative force who consistently pitches and executes distinctive coverage of race in America, to help us elevate the voices of Black, Latino, Hispanic, Asian American, Native American and all races to tell the stories of inequality, education, economy, health care, culture, entertainment, sports and other key topics that highlight solutions, inspiration and leadership. The Senior Writer also will be a key collaborator in helping organize and plan with other CNN contributors who cover race, ethnicity and inclusion across multiple teams. Because this role is key to all CNN platforms, this Senior Writer must be skilled at discussing, explaining and putting into context the key issues of the beat and beat coverage on CNN’s television platforms.
This Senior Writer will report, write, package and publish in-depth, breaking news and quick takes on issues of race for both Digital and TV platforms. This Senior Writer is a best in class shaper and sharpener of stories and ideas and a natural collaborator who can work across CNN’s news platforms and teams in service of getting the best content to our vast audiences. She/He is a true partner in identifying distinctive angles on top stories and finding distinctive stories on the beat. The Senior Writer must be skilled at breaking news reporting and writing, as well as proficient at producing in-depth or explanatory journalism on the beat.
What will you be doing?
This Senior Writer will research and write high-impact news and distinctive stories on race, ethnicity and inclusion. She/He will write with clarity, voice and context. This Senior Writer will demonstrate a high pace of activity and deep curiosity about current events, issues and the diverse voices that define race in this country. She/He should show a high level of flexibility and the ability to juggle multiple tasks at once.
Idea generation is key. This is a full-time beat that will be fueled not only by breaking news but also by the people, issues and cultural changes that have not yet made news.
This is a varied job -- some days may be fast and furious as you work on a single and fast-flowing developing story, some days will be focused on reporting and producing a deeper dive on a key topic, some days may involve contributing to on-air coverage of key developments on the beat.
What do we need from you?
- 5 years or more of related experience covering race and/or covering a high-impact beat
- College degree preferred
- Excellent writing and storytelling skills
- An understanding of how to write and frame stories for a digital audience
- Experience covering the issues, conversations and triumphs regarding race, ethnicity and bias
- Ability to break news
- Ability to generate distinctive story ideas and report and write them accurately
- Ability to collaborate across teams to produce content, brainstorm ideas and cover fast-breaking news
- Experience covering a beat and building credible, diverse sources
- Ability to talk about your reporting or key issues on your beat as part of CNN’s television coverage as needed
